Rishi Sunak found his own net with a footballing blunder, mistakenly looking forward to his side playing Manchester United this weekend – when they actually face Leicester City. The Southampton FC fan’s confusion came a day after it was pointed out that the McDonald’s breakfast option was removed from the menu more than two years ago. Having described himself as an “underdog” in the Tory leadership race, the former chancellor was asked at the Manchester games how, as a Saints fan, he would return to winning ways. “I’m going to be unpopular to say it here, starting by beating United this weekend,” he said. Southampton, the city of Mr Sunak’s birth, are not due to play Manchester United until August 27. The self-proclaimed “massive football fan” to become the next prime minister has previously said he would be a “very happy man” if he could manage his team. Michael Gove has endorsed M Sunak as the next Tory leader (Image: Reuters) Mr Sunak later received a huge boost in his campaign when Michael Gove declared his support to become the next Conservative leader, accusing Liz Truss of taking a “vacation from reality”. Writing in The Times, he said: “I do not expect to be in government again. But it was the privilege of my life to spend 11 years in cabinet under three prime ministers. I know what the job requires. And Rishi has it.” He added: “Here again I am deeply concerned that the context of the leadership debate by many has been a holiday from reality. The answer to the cost of living crisis cannot simply be to drop further ‘handouts’ and cut taxes.” Chants of “Tories scum off our streets” and “Tories out, refugees in” were chanted (Image: EPA) Around 100 protesters greeted Tory party members as they arrived for the introductions at Manchester Central’s conference centre. Chants of “Tories off our streets” and “Tories out, refugees in” shouted at citizens as they queued to get inside. Nearby, a decommissioned ambulance was parked outside the online campaign 38 Degrees, which has launched a call for the government to “fix as a matter of priority” an NHS backlog of what it says are 6.7 million people on waiting lists for specialist care. Jonathan Harty, campaigns director at 38 Degrees, said: “The dire state of this backlog is no accident, but it is certainly an emergency – which is why we had to send an ambulance. “Millions of patients are already paying the price for years of underfunding the NHS and it’s time the people who want to be our next Prime Minister do something about it. “So far all we’ve heard from the candidates is that Liz Truss wants to scrap the very funding that was meant to help the service recover from Covid, while all Rishi Sunak can come up with is fines to people who miss GP appointments. It’s not good enough. “If there is to be any real chance of tackling this chronic problem, the NHS must be fully funded with clear plans to solve workforce shortages and eliminate appointment delays.” Contact our news team by emailing [email protected] For more stories like this, check out our news page.
