Nakita Baron, 31, was found dead inside a dark brown Bentley parked in the 100 block of Everwoods Court SW.
Her husband, Talal Fuani, was also shot. He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
Police say the couple was targeted by a man who allegedly fired multiple shots at the Bentley around 8:20 a.m., before driving away in a black 2017-2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Baron studied at Mount Royal University and had recently been accepted to medical school at the University of Calgary to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
Baron reflected on her incredible achievement in a recent Instagram post.
“I feel proud and inspired by how much work I have put into my education,” she wrote.
“Looking back at my high school record, my highest grade was 33 percent when I dropped out of high school and started my hairdressing apprenticeship at 16.”
Desdemona Budanov, a close friend of Baron’s, says she was devastated to learn of her death.
“She really got her life on track and was just an amazing woman. She really worked to change that, and started school and worked really hard to be her own person in her own way.
“He had the best heart.”
Brittany Irons affectionately referred to Baron as her “wife.”
The pair were close friends, and Irons said Baron was there to support so many people in her life.
“A lot of people don’t know that side of her, but she was really goofy and fun and playful. She was the life of the party,” Irons said.
“She was always that girl who if she was in need herself, she would be the first person on your doorstep, even if she was in rough shape, who would be there to comfort you. She always put her own feelings aside to be there for everyone else.”
Nakita Baron, 31, died in a shooting early Thursday in the southwest Evergreen community. She excelled at everything she did, kind, likeable and so loved. I’m so proud of her. She would do anything for anyone, so thoughtful, caring and loving. She talked to her mom everyday.” CTV News also reached out to the Fuani family, who requested privacy at this time and did not want to comment.
