Details have been announced of the local roll-out of a new Covid vaccine – designed to target two different forms of the virus – starting next month. The jab is specifically designed to work against the original coronavirus and the Omicron variant, which sparked a wave last winter. This month, the UK became the first country in the world to approve the jab. The autumn booster program will start in the region on September 5 and will see some people receiving their fourth dose of vaccine. As with previous vaccine campaigns, vaccinations will be given in GP surgeries and pharmacies, while follow-up centres, ‘pop-up’ clinics and ‘roving groups’ will also be used. The rollout will begin on September 5, with nursing home residents and the confined at home, before expanding the following week. From 12 September, people who are clinically vulnerable or aged 75 and over will receive invitations and be able to make appointments. During the previous rollout, Norfolk and Waveney were among the most effective areas in the country, with seven in 10 eligible people receiving three doses. A spokesperson for NHS Norfolk and Waveney said: “NHS staff are preparing to administer Covid-19 booster shots this autumn as well as the annual flu shot. “Norfolk and Waveney, like other areas of the country, are now finalizing preparations to implement this scheme. “As with previous rounds of the Covid vaccination programme, the autumn booster will be offered first to the most vulnerable and/or older members of our population and then spread across age groups over a period of time. “Vaccinations will be offered at a range of locations including GP surgeries, local pharmacies, hospital hubs and major vaccination centres, with locations currently being finalized and confirmed. “We will also organize pop-up clinics and roving vaccination teams to help make access to vaccinations easier and more convenient for local people. “We urge everyone who has been invited for a booster shot for both flu and Covid-19 to take up the offer as soon as possible – it will give you maximum protection this winter.” More details about the venues are expected to be announced later. The new campaign comes as the infrastructure from previous releases is still closed. A vaccine center in Dereham recently moved to Kelling, only to close at the end of this month.
