Jason Zilkey A desire to spend more time with his growing family prompted West Kelowna Coun. Jason Zilkey is retiring from politics. Zilkie was elected to a four-year term in his first foray into municipal politics in 2018. In a press release Thursday, Zilkie said when he was elected he had two young children, ages two and four, and now, he and his wife Erin have welcomed a third child. The couple has also been approved as foster parents after successfully passing the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s foster care training program. “My family and I have decided not to seek re-election in order to spend more time with family and serve our community in other ways while trusting the Lord’s plan for our future,” Zilkie said. “Our goal is to continue to serve the hurting and broken both locally and as we travel to third world countries as a family. “There is no other place like West Kelowna, and I have truly enjoyed serving as a council member. It has truly been an honor to serve this community that I have called home since I was six years old.” Zilkie took the opportunity to thank local residents, city staff and his fellow city councilors for their support during his four years on the city council. “Finally, to Mr. Mayor, it has been an honor to serve and lead with you. Our city is blessed to have a mayor like Mayor (Gord) Milsom, who is incredibly compassionate, a great listener and a great leader.” Zilkie is the second West Kelowna councilor to announce he will not seek re-election. Longtime councilman and former mayor Doug Findlater is also stepping away from politics. The remaining advisors, Rick de Jong, Steven Johnston, Carol Zannon and Jason Friesen have yet to officially announce their intentions. Mayor Milsom is the only declared mayoral candidate. West Kelowna residents head to the polls to elect a new council on October 15.
