Austin Amos walked into the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Wednesday night, accompanied by his mother, after investigators released video of the suspects wanted in the death of 52-year-old Kutin Gyimah. Police say Gyimah hit his head on the ground during an altercation with fare-violating passengers on Saturday. Amos has six previous arrests, including robbery, criminal mischief, criminal contempt and sexual harassment. A second man, also in his 20s, also arrived in the area on Wednesday night. He is still being questioned. Two girls — ages 13 and 15 — are still wanted for their alleged role in the attack. A 16-year-old girl who was initially identified by detectives is no longer wanted. Detectives believe Amos delivered the final blow to the taxi driver, sending him to the pavement and possibly causing his death. Surveillance video shows the moment Gyimah was punched and landed on his head. His wife, Abigail Gyiham, said she was relieved at the news of the arrest. “He was my kids’ hero,” she said. “He was my backbone. He was the one I looked up to. I look up to God, but other than God, he was the only one I looked up to. And now, his life has just been cut short just like that.” The couple has four children aged 3, 5, 7 and 8. “He was my backbone,” he said over the weekend. “I’m lost right now. My kids here. I don’t know what to do now. I’m lost. I’m lost in this world.” Gyiham’s colleagues described him as a man who worked restlessly, especially at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. “This gentleman drove his taxi, he never stopped picking up passengers,” said co-driver Spyros Drakos. “He, to me, is a hero, as are first responders. If a doctor, a nurse, someone, a family member needed to get somewhere, he drove the cab and never stopped.” According to police, when Kutin Gyimah dropped off five passengers near the beach at 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard in Edgemere just before 6:30 a.m. instead of paying the fare, they tried to rob him. Police said Gyimah chased them and was attacked. He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to St. John’s, where he was pronounced dead. “Her husband went to work … like he did every day at 5 in the morning, and he’s never coming back,” said Fernando Mateo, of the New York State Taxi Drivers Association. “This guy took them to take them where they wanted. Why kill the man?” The federation is also raising money to help the Gyiham family pay for the funeral with a GoFundMe page.
