PETERBOROUH — Politicians usually spout perfectly safe, clichéd soundbites. Then there’s the mayor of Peterborough, Diane Therrien. Therrien threw caution and consent into the air when he commented on a wild scene that took place in Peterborough over the weekend. Followers of Canadian QAnon figure Romana Didulo have tried and failed miserably to arrest Peterborough police officers for their role in circulating COVID-19 vaccines in Canada. “People have been asking me to comment on last weekend’s events at #ptbo,” Therrien tweeted. “I hate giving airtime/spotlight to these idiots. Here is my comment: fk off, you fkwads.” In a statement, Peterborough Police said three men are facing charges in connection with the incident at Peterborough Police Station on Saturday afternoon. Officers said the riotous scene began when about 30 protesters gathered outside the station around 1 p.m. Around 4 p.m., police said members of the group blocked officers arriving for their afternoon shifts and tried to storm the police station. “Police officers tried to arrest a protester when the officers were surrounded. A protester then hit two police officers,” the statement said. Investigators said they are also looking for two suspects who allegedly threatened and assaulted a counter-protester. “Officers learned the victim’s license plate was torn and he was verbally threatened in one incident and had his mask cut off by another individual while in front of the police station,” police said. The suspects are described by police as: suspect one:

Woman with short hair Five foot three Wearing a light blue plaid shirt and sunglasses About 65 years old

Suspects two:

Male 50 to 60 years old Black leather vest with chains hanging from the pocket, blue jeans and a black headscarf White mustache and goatee About five foot seven

In a briefing on Monday, Peterborough Police Deputy Chief Constable Tim Farquharson said the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was looking into the arrest of a protester, but declined further comment.

The SIU is an independent state agency that investigates police officer conduct that may have resulted in the death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or discharge of a firearm at a person.
