A Russian spacewalker had to rush back inside the International Space Station on Wednesday when the battery voltage in his spacesuit suddenly dropped. Russian Mission Control ordered Oleg Artemiev, the station commander, to quickly return to the pod so he could connect his suit to the station’s power. The hatch remained open as his spacewalking companion, Denis Matveev, settled out. NASA said neither was ever in danger. Matveev, in fact, stayed out for another hour or so before he too was ordered to wrap it up. Matveev’s suit was fine, but Russian Mission Control cut the spacewalk short as flight rules insist on the buddy system. Astronauts managed to install cameras on the European Space Agency’s new robotic arm before the problem occurred, just two hours into a planned 6 1/2-hour spacewalk. “You know, the beginning was so great,” Matveev said as he walked back inside, some of the robot arm installation work left unfinished. The 36-foot-long (11-meter) robotic arm arrived on the space station last summer in a Russian lab. NASA’s spacewalks, meanwhile, have been suspended for months. In March, water got into the helmet of a German spacewalker. It wasn’t nearly as big a leak as the one in 2013 when an Italian astronaut nearly drowned, but it’s still a safety concern. In the previous case, the water came from the cooling system in the suit’s underwear. The spacesuit that malfunctioned in March will be returned to Earth as early as this week in a SpaceX capsule for further research.
