UPDATE 8:05 p.m The fire has been extinguished and the crews are withdrawing. Firefighters have so far been unable to comment. ORIGINAL 7:05 p.m The Lake Country Fire Department is on the scene of the fire at George Elliot Middle School. Central Okanagan Public Schools sent out an announcement at 6:55 p.m. saying the fire is contained to the roof and exterior wall of the auxiliary gym, outside the girls’ locker room. The statement said SD23 expects the fire department to bring the fire under control soon. “We will be working with the fire department to mitigate the limited damage to the school and expect this event will not affect the return to school in September. We will continue to work with the fire department and RCMP as they investigate the cause of the fire,” the statement said. The first day of school at George Elliot Secondary is scheduled for September 6.
